Restored Century Farmstead

  Tucked away on a gentle hill and surrounded by 28 acres of excellent fields and forest, this spectacular 1800s restored farmstead is a rare find. It’s located just 18 minutes inland from Mahone Bay with easy access to Highway 103. The city is about 70 minutes away.

The traditional 1.5 story farmhouse has been renovated, upgraded and restored. It sits on a solid Lunenburg County granite foundation and has excellent systems including a drilled well, a dug well for the barn, upgraded septic, 200 amp electrical with circuit breakers, oil and wood combination furnace, Morso woodstove and a newly installed Kachelofen woodburning stove.

The exterior sidewalls are shingled and the owners are having the roof re-shingled this summer as part of their on-going maintenance program. Most of the windows have been replaced and the floors are a combination of new hardwood and original planks.

You enter in through a low hung covered porch that keeps the weather off you. There’s a small entry with access to the wood room and a half bath. And a custom made steel spiral staircase that is neatly fitted into a small corner. This is the back stairway to the rear rooms.

The kitchen retains its 1800s charm with wooden cabinets and wood floor. But it’s been remodeled to provide modern day conveniences. A side door opens to a wonderful terrace area with a low stone wall and outdoor shower. Adjoining the kitchen is the diningroom with windows on two side and long livingroom. The owners installed an efficient “Kachelofen” stove in the corner of the diningroom and it heats wonderfully and looks great, too. In the front, there’s the main door, a small foyer with storage and a den. Upstairs are three bedrooms, a bathroom and another room ideal for a studio, 4th bedroom or study. Connected to this is another room with the spiral staircase. This room also includes a sink and a shower expanding the possibilities for this space. There’s a spacious attic above the main part of the house ideal for storage.

The upper floor ceilings are low and cozy but the main floor ceilings are high with exposed beams and plank flooring. Overall the home has many original details combined with special features like the expensive European light fixture hanging over the dining table and the Austrian oak 3/4” plank floor in the livingroom and diningroom.

The house and barn are totally hidden from view and surrounded by gardens and mature trees. There’s a nice central parking area between the buildings making turning and deliveries easy.

You’ll love the barn! The owners meticulously restored this century post and beam barn in 2003/2004. It’s solid, tight and very pretty. It’s big too, with many useful areas. On one end is a horse barn with 3 large box stalls, and space for tack. Then there’s a smaller area ideal for goats. The main doors open to a huge area ideal for more horses, other livestock or a home-based business. Of course, there’s a full loft above. On the other end there’s garage/workshop space. The barn has been reshingled on the outside with cedar shingles, the roof is steel over wood. The doors are all rebuilt and the barn is completely rewired. There’s an excellent dug well beside the barn that supplies water just to the barn. Beyond the barn is a gentle hill that’s used for pasture and hay. In all, there’s about 15 acres of open land and 13 acres in forest including 4 acres of Christmas trees.

A sand riding ring is located beyond the barn with a 360 degree view of the surround countryside. Trails lead off the farm and connect with miles and miles of woods roads and pathways ideal for hacking. There are many lakes and rivers in the area for those who enjoy swimming, canoeing and fishing.
